The latest temporary exhibition at Epping Forest District Museum marks the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe or VE Day on 8 May 2025. It tells the story of the Second World War Home Front within the Epping Forest District of Essex. The exhibition follows the themes of the War of Home, War Work, Defending the District, Service and the Wars End.

From 1940 to 1945, people of the district endured attacks by bombs and rockets, evacuation of loved ones to safer, rural areas of the country, conscription and rationing of goods. You can see objects, stories and oral histories from the museum’s collection as well as a selection donated from local history societies, community groups and other district heritage. The exhibition tells the stories of individuals whose lives were transformed after war broke out in September 1939.

This exhibition doesn’t aim to tell a comprehensive history of the Second World War. But the focus is on the real experiences of ordinary people living through the deadliest conflict in human history with a recognition and respect for those who lived through the war and helped secure peace and freedom.
